I got a 3 yr old dog. Max, from the shelter before I got chickens. He was in the shelter because the widow could not handle him.. when I got chickens I put a roo in a parrot cage in the living room and when the dog went after him I reprimanded him. after a few hours of that max calmed down. Next day I held the roo and let max sniff him.. then I put the roo in a cage in the yard and a shock collar on Max. I took max out there and walked him around the roo. I turned max loose and went in the house. everytime he went after the roo I shocked him. after a couple of days, he left the roo alone, then I let the roo and max loose in a yard. whenever max went after the roo he got shocked... worked with max for a week or so .. when max would just sleep in the yard w/the roo wandering around, I got some hens and life is good for all
ETA max kills opossums, skunks and raccoons. He would chase the wild turkeys and hawks. I have turkeys now too and he has learned that he has to leave my birds alone. He still chases the wild ones.
