What about buying one of those puppy pens to put up around her crate in the basement?

I'd put something down on the floor, then put bedding over it to help kep the mess to a mimimum.

Plus for the food and water use something like this:

Sometimes the diapers can be messy. It depends if you change them enough and what you feed them also. "Worm" poop is VERY nasty. I give Biscuit a couple of worms at the begining of his bath and by the time he has bathed and preened they usually have passed on through. I put him in the tube and take off his diaper. I then take the shower head down and rinse off his butt if needed and then fill the tub about half full of water. After that he likes me to put a handfull of frozen peas. (Just to let you know how spoiled he is he can tell the difference in brands!!!!!! I am not making this up! I first gave him Aldi's brand frozen peas. He loves them as many as I'd let him have. I ran out and got the "Pictsweet" brand and you would have thought that I tried to get him to eat something rotten. So I then got some more from Aldi's. He ate them so I tried to throw in some of the others mixed in and he spit some out and ate what I assumed were the others. I even tried feeding them one at a time throwing them in the water and he would spit out the Pictsweet and would rant for more. I also tried the wal-mart brand and he hates them too. He just likes the Aldi's brand so far.)
Anyway to get back on track with what I was saying. After the peas he gets worms but not everyday though. Then I pull the curtain and he splashes around and cleans himself. Then HE lets the water out when he's done and preens for along time. He calls me when he poops and I rinse it down then he goes back to preening. That goes on for an hour or two. He has to have those feathers just so! Other than that he wears his diapers all day and all night. I feed him the last time about an hour or so before I go to sleep so his diapers are not that bad in the morning. If he gets anything on him I just wipe it off with a gentle baby wipe. He either sleeps beside the bed on the floor right by my head or goes under the bed and sleeps close to our pitbull. Yes I did say pitbull. I have two dogs and two cats and Biscuit is definitly the boss. They all get along great. I never leave him alone with the dogs though. They stay in a cage if we leave the house. Biscuit has free range though. If I am going to be gone for long time then Biscuit goes too. He loves to go and ride in the car. He recently went on vaction with my Boyfriend and I and our two dogs to Arkansas. We went to visit my Uncle that lives on the river and the dogs and duck loved it. If I was in the water so was Biscuit. If I got out so did he. At one point he was so fixed on cleaning himself that he had drifted a little ways down river and I said "Biscuit what are you doing?" He looked up and then around and like speed boated himself back to me as quick as he could. It was funny and he didn't let it happen again. As you can see I love My duck and I don't have real children so he is my child. I love being a duck mom!

That food and water thing is a great idea. Biscuit is messy with the water bowl.

TBitt,

Thanks for the idea...I had thought about getting an exercise dog pen. I love the idea for the water and food dishes. I really need to make something like that. Zoe is really messy with her food just like any other duck I'm sure!

That food/water catcher is a mess saver. I kid you not.
I never have to clean the bedding because it is messed with water and food. It all falls through the mesh and into the tub underneath.

For the duck run (using the puppy pen) maybe try putting down a barrier to keep your floor from getting icky......then put the bedding down.

I used something simular to this for the duck house. (mildew resistant - it is for bathroom/shower walls)

This is how it looked before we put the bedding down:

wow i cant believe your dogs don't go after him! they must be very sweet. i know pit bulls have a bad reputation too, and i didnt think it meant anything until one of my neighbors moved in with one. they didnt keep her on a leash and she killed one of my cats about a year ago

i also thought having the duck loose with cats would be a little complicated, but my survivor cat has been just fine

they pretty much avoid eachother now that theyre the same size, but now that Petrie (my duck) is getting to that reproductive age she has gotten pretty aggressive...and whats strange is the duck hisses at my cat....at first when i heard it i thought the hissing was coming from the cat, but its coming from the duck! maybe she learned that from the cat? lol but theyre both my spoiled babies!

my cat's just like "...meh" lol

Ive considered trying to have my duck as a house pet. Was there any secret to showing them to your dogs? I have my duck right now in an extra bedroom and when im in there my Boxer mix stands at the door staring him down I also have two labs..But it would be awesome if i was able to keep him inside instead of finding another place for him to live.

my dog scared me when I first let him see the duck. He used to have sqeeky chew toys in the shape of baby ducks and stuff around easter and
he would tear them up in a minute! My duckling would cheep just like how a sqeeky toy would and the dog would have his tail up like it was ready
to attack it out of my hands! it's been almost three weeks now and I let the dog spend a little more time around it and now that the duckling is getting
larger, I let it run around near the dog. The dog actually is jealous! I knew this because everytime I would go to pick up the duck, he puts his face into
my arms as if I were going to pick him up instead! So now he would knock over the duck and always stand in front of him. He never hurt it, turns out
it was jealousy! haha

I have 3 indoor ducks! They spend most of their time indoors, but do go "out to play" everyday as well. They love indoor life and it is really rewarding to owners as well. Nothing like falling asleep on the couch and waking up and realizing that your duck has fallen asleep on your stomach
