harder to handle the roo,if the snake gets you just don't pull away and he'll let go without much damage at all,the roo can whip your butt if your not on your toes

PLEASE, if you are as unfamiliar with snakes as it sounds, do lots of research before just running out and getting a snake.

They are delicate, precious little creatures and need proper care....as with any animal. I have 3....a California King Snake and 2 Ball Pythons. My snakes have never been angry with me and I can't imagine a situation where they would be. I REALLY want a Mexican Black King next. Kings are my favorite.

However, I love them all. They are amazing animals, make awesome pets, and I would highly recommend them to anyone, as long as you get the right snake to suit your needs.

Have had many, a king snake should be fine to start with, just remember when they shed they may strike at you because they can not see.


One thing on all pets, look what happen with the 14 yr old chimp attack the woman.
All can attack at sometime, more people have been bitten by dogs that DONT BITE. Danger is when that pet has the power to kill.
Pitbull can kill because of locking jaws, snake over 12 ft should never be handle unless more than one person is around.
Some of larger birds can kill(Ostrich).

Sorry little off the subject.

Rooster or king snake Either should be able to be handle by an adult when they are mad.

This is a very important point, and not just snakes over 12'. Any snake you are not strong enough to handle if it decides to squeeze you. Our two Ball Pythons actually belong to our 9 y/o. While they are not large snakes, they are strong. He is not ever allowed to hold them without an adult present.​

Very good point, I was talking about adult men. Thanks for that point.

I think everyone on here has made some very good points but I wanted to add, baby Kingsnakes can have an attitude problem. However, that doesn't mean that they won't grow up to be easy to handle and sweet adults. It is very common for the youngsters to act overly aggressive because in the wild, if you don't have any real defense ( such as venom ) against something that might eat you, then you better at least act all big and bad so that the predator at least thinks twice about eating you ( at which point you might just have enough time to escape ).
I also agree that it might be a good idea to do a little more research before you jump into the exciting world of Herp keeping. A really good website to check out would be www.kingsnake.com
Also, I recommend heading to your local petstore and talking with the reptile specialist. Don't simply take anything they say as the gospel though. Research it for yourself.
I have heard a lot of bad advice given by people who should know better.
Please note - That doesn't mean all petstore employees are ignorant, far from it. I have worked with some of the best, unfortunately, I have worked with plenty who would make up anything to get rid of you too.

I might be wierd but I love my snakes! I keep several in my classroom and we hold them! yes we take the precautions, Mother! Corns are a good start as are ball pythons...none of mine have bitten me but I have had my Mexican Milk bite a couple kids...one was teasing it with his finger and well it struck thinking it was food or just needed biting cuz he was being a jerk! Same snake bit another kid when it was shedding and I had told them to leave it alone!!! I have had snakes you could hold while they were shedding and then i have ol' Snake'O that gets a little testy! They are all different and you just have to learn to read them which as others have offered can be found by reading! Best advice that was ever given to me and that came from a pet store guy that is great! Got me a savanah monitor from him!
