Hi yall... I just joined BYC and am in need of immediate help.

My ten year old drake, yes ten years, just today started to extrude his penis. I'm worried sick already. He lost his mate recently so he hasn't been mating so that is not the problem. His pen is clean and he occasionally swims, so I'm not sure why this is happening.

After reading some posts, I put Neosporin on my boy (Angel) and tried to coax it back inside, but with no luck. He's in pain, and I am so sad to see him like this. It's still pink, so it may resolve itself, but he doesn't sit or eat really, and it affects his poop because it's really runny.

What should I do? An avian vet is sort of out of the question, my parents won't pay for it and the closest one is 250 miles away. I know it could possibly resolve itself, but anything will help so my poor sweet Angel won't die.

Keep up with the antibiotics, that's good.

Sad that this is your introduction, but welcome, welcome.

Some have found using Preparation H helps.

Have you had him swimming in tepid water? Also, some vitamins might help. At his age, he could have hormonal swelling of abdominal tissue, so whatever you can do to boost his system overall may help.

I don't know, but I wonder if some kind of herbal anti-inflammatory might help, something non-toxic. Hope someone with more experience chimes in.

Hi and welcome I'm sorry about your drake having this problem. There is another poster dealing with this same issue. I found this link that may help but looks like you have done as much already. except let him have some soak time as much as you can give him. try warm water first then cool until you see signs of improvement. The one thing you don't want to happen is for the tissue to dry out. At the age of 10 I have a drake thats 9 could it be poor muscle control since he isn't mating. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/381872/phallus-prostration-male-prolapse-help#post_8386954

We've been giving him some treatments but he looks like he's in a lot of pain

He won't sit, barely eats, he drinks and preens himself, but is acting very far from normal.

It makes me wonder if the phallus problem is only a secondary issue, maybe to some sort of infection :(((

I really hope he gets better, but I just don't know what to do. I read the other posts, and do what I can, but nothing is promised.

Guess it doesn't matter now, my sweet Angel has passed.

He was the best drake I ever had. He survived dog attacks and rode in my homecoming float with me. He was gentle and loving.

I figure it was a bacterial infection. He was puking in the bath I soaked him in. He died in my mom's arms :(

Definitely a tough loss. His little spirit lives on forever.

Oh, I am so sad to read this!

At his age I wonder if something else was going on and what you were dealing with was the result of "it".
