I have a handful of laying hens for egg production, I do let them free range for a better part of the day. I have one auracauna hen who disappeared for a better part of the week and thought she was a goner. The last few mornings I have spotted her eating scratch with the rest of the flock and getting water, figured she decided to set a nest hidden somewhere along the overgrown creek bed and figured when she gets tired of setting bum eggs she will come back to the coop. Tonight however I caught a glimpse of her and a male pheasant and when she came out to get water he called her back and off to the underbrush they went together. So my question is could she be setting fertile eggs. There isn't another chicken other than mine within a 5 mile radius and they do not keep a rooster either. This is the first time in 3 years that this hen has shown any inclination of setting anything. In the past she had no interest in being broody in the coop, so maybe she has had a change of heart if she is being bred by a pheasant and is it even possible that she'll hatch anything out?
