Hello all,
yesterday we had five pheasant babies hatch. The first four were strong, healthy, and active. The fifth one had a hard time getting out of his shell because his beak seemed deformed. My father helped him out (I know I know you’re not supposed to do that) but he seemed strong otherwise.
When he came out, we noticed his beak was missing large portions on either side of the top. Overall he looked like he had a cleft lip on his beak. When he lays With his headto the side I can See straight through his beak to the ground. His eyes also remained shut and looked potentially like they were deformed as well.
we determined that the reason he wasn’t able to hatch was because of these problems and assumed he would pass away quickly. For several hours he lay on the floor of the incubator eyes closed, feet curled up. I didn’t expect him to make it through the night.
however, this morning he is still with us! He stood up briefly when I put my hand in. Made some peeps and moved around a bit. Seems shaky but his body seems perfectly normal and he was able to take a few steps. One of his eyes has opened a little bit I am not convinced he can see. His beak and eyes remain his biggest problem, but as he has now survived this long I’m wondering if anyone has any advice?
anyine seen anything like this before? What can I do to help him out? Not sure how long he’ll last, but I’d love to make his life as comfortable as possible.
