Just picked up a kennel off of freecycle ( http://www.lowes.com/pd_314896-538-...94816956_4294937087_?rpp=15$No=45$identifier= ) that we're going to use as part of the pen for our Swinhoe! We're going to modify it so it has some housing on the back to add some extra space too. So excited!

Thanks for the tips. What I really like about it is that we can just leave one side "open" and extend the pen with something else too if the grass doesn't grow.

Is bird netting the best covering? I think that using more wire on top (either more chain link or chicken wire) might hurt him if he decides to fly "up" too fast. We were thinking bird netting and/or a tarp.

i use the game bird netting as you can see, Ive never had a bird damage themselves from flying into it. i seen people use chicken wire but the birds when they fly into it normally can get injured pretty bad, scalped when flying on an angle into it..

i use a sun shade on it during the hot summer months so it still allows the rain to pass through which the Eddy's seem to like, they will sit out in the rain rather than go into the house and roost in there during any rain shower....

I use the dog kennel pens for my pheasants and chickens. The tops are covered with 2x4 welded wire and then fiberglass panels for protection from elements. goldens in a 6x10 (happy and giving me fertile eggs, 1st chick hatched 5-12). Amherst in 6x10 but will be getting a little larger one this weekend. And tragopans in 5x10 (also getting larger this weekend but I hate to move as the hen is laying, but the male is too young). I have not had a problem with the size or tops and in my area of eastern Pennsylvania I need the extra protection to deter bears. So far no problem with them. The fiberglass panels are to keep the birds out of the view of the Red-tails and eagles in our area. They are always on the hunt. Kerry

Young ones can....more importantly, predators can get to your birds though chain link.
