Pheasants

@pa1946 In my opinion goldens are by far the easiest to raise. Goldens are easy to find (a lot of breeders) and they are very hardy birds. They don't need thin mosquitoe proof cages and can handle very cold weather to very warm weather (here in Michigan I have raised them through -30F and colder, to +100F). They also are not as wild as other species like ringnecks. Not to mention they are very beautiful and come in a lot of different color mutaions the most well known being the original reds, the yellows, dark throats, silvers, and the peach.

thanks for the reply birdmanmax, this is the information i was seeking in my first (poorly worded) post. My knowledge of pheasants is so very limited, but seeing these amazing birds with all their color is tempting for this old man. again thanks tony, birdmanmax an kevin for the information.

thanks for the information Kevin, Golden's are only one you listed that i have seen. Are Golden's a hearty breed or do they tend to be delicate? I have never tried raising pheasants but if i do try i want to start with a type that is not on the delicate side.

Golden's are a pretty tough old birds. Sure they look delicate about the size of a game chicken or bany, but they will stand up to the normal weather punishments and seem to be hardy breeds as for disease resistance.

I have ring neck pheasant green pheasants and black pheasant they all go broody but what i found is if you start finding eggs in a corner or in a bowl like spot leave them dont touch them if they are layed on a open spot like by a food dish take those away and add if you can lots of branches and once you find where a hen is going to lay leaver her alone do go near the nest ever until the poults hatch in the two year i have had pheasants I have had

1- ring neck hen ,13 eggs,11 fertile,9 hatched,4 survived
1-ring neck hen,9 eggs ,all fertile, 5 survived
1-ring neck hen, 6 survived hatched 2 days apart so raised all 12 poults and 2 mamas togather and one would have 2 babys under her the other would have the rest they shared them all and both got along
1- ring neck hen 6 survived
1-melinistic hen- 14 eggs all fertil, lost 5,hatched 9 she had eggs from rign neck hen green hen and black hen she had ever color pf pheasant I had
the reason I only had one hatch last year was I had 2 rosoter and they would not leave the hens alone long enough for them to sit

good luck

Thanks BirdDog & Tayten for the information, from the information received after my first question it would appear that goldens are the answer if i try raising pheasants. I say goldens because everyone agrees they are tough an hardy birds. If i understand correctly many different hens will go broody, but goldens are the easiest to raise. When Birdmanmax said that some types of pheasants need mosquito proof pens i had to read that again to be sure i was correct. thanks again everyone for education
