If I take an ice cube, and put it into a drink, the melting of the ice cube cools the drink. The warming of the ice cube cools the larger drink, making it refreshing to drink. But, eventually, the ice will melt away, and the drink will continue to warm after the initial cooling from the melting ice.

If we were to take the temperature of the ice, and the temperature of the drink, and compare the average to the temperature of the drink after the ice has started to melt in it, we would find that the temperature of the drink is warmer than what might be expected from the average, even though the overall drink is cooler than when the experiment started.
