ok, I am totally against cruelty to any animal but my daughter once kicked our chicken 'Hot Wheels' like a football. Please note she was 4 and reprimanded for this and has NEVER done it again. But upon doing so this looks exactly what happened to Hot Wheels. Eventually it all went back together thank god. Dont know if this sad story helps. My daughter also has to live with the fact that everyone in the house calls her Chicken Bum and probably will for the rest of her life. We even put it on the egg cartons that we give to our friends. She learnt her lesson.

From what I can see in the first post, the hen may have had excess fat or the beginnings of reproductive problems (fluid in the abdomen/ascites, fat, EYP, etc.). It's not uncommon for laying hens to develop a droopy bottom and have feather loss there - also the feathers are wet, so that exposes more skin too:) Could your hen have experienced some internal damage and fluid accumulation when she was kicked? Possibly that may be why she looked exactly like the OP's hen - hard to know. Glad to hear you report she was eventually o.k. Seems like you handled it well and your daughter learned her lesson.

We're glad you're here and hope you stick around, join in and share. Take a few minutes to introduce yourself on the New Members forum too:)
