i was wondering WHAT i had..... i ordered chicks this year from?? ideal hatchery.. blue cochins.. they are all beautiful. BUT one hen is blue with barring pattern on her.. she is a really neat color, but i had orderd BLUE... is bluebarred an actual "color" .. or is it a mistake?? i thought maybe a barred rooster slipped over into the blue hens pen for a midnight romp in the hay.. and i got the half breed!!!!

I am guessing I would probably also get some non barred because he only has one barring gene... Guess I should find me some black hens. The person I got them from had a lot of different colours, black, blue, white and the dominant roo was barred so every one of my chicks was barred. But some of the offspring are not... from non barred hens that is. I know I am biased but I think he is gorgeous and he is very laid back. He is a good roo and takes really good care of his ladies. He always chases them back inside at top speed if he sees a hawk cruising by and they get all the treats first.

Chickens sure are good for the soul! I love watching him run with his fluffy long underwear! He does this big macho strut/jog that makes me bust out laughing!

How far from the standard is he folks? Is his back too long? Neck too long? Just wondering what his good points and bad points are....

His chicks will be barred no matter what.

Barring is dominate when the rooster carries the gene. When the hen carries it, her sons will be barred (coloring from the rooster will likely bleed through in some areas) and her daughters will be solid colored (unless mated with a barred rooster).

ChicknGurl, I thought the same as you but have since found out that the roo can have one or two barring genes. I have hatched a number of another barred roos chicks and some of them are not barred at all and there are no other roos around to muddy the water. Some of the genetics guru's explained that when the roo only has one barring gene he will have a small percentage of chicks that are not barred. My bantie roo has a white 'pencilled' white breasted chick, two of his other chicks are snow white! and some are barred. And there are two pitch black chicks as well from the same roo!! In fact he has more non barred chicks than barred! Talk about confusing the issue!! If the roo has 2 barring genes all his offspring will be barred. And you are right about the hen side too, if I remember right a barred hen crossed with a non barred roo will have half barred chicks (all the males will be barred) and the females will be solid colours... I am sure someone will straighten that out if I mixed it up

Still trying to get it all straight in my own mind... Anyway, one of Bojangles chicks is not barred at the moment (may still show up later) so there is a chance that he is a one barring gene dude. We'll see...

I think he is very very handsome! I have some barred rock/white cochin chicks that I just hatched out this weeekend they are so cute.It will be fun to see how they turn out.
