**Pic**white leision in mouth

Hi,

I am a vet and a poultry lover.
A severe vitamin A deficiency gives birds the appearance of having a form of chronic respiratory disease, a cold, or other such diagnosis. There is a discharge from one or both nostrils, swelling of the face around the eyes, and the eyelids may be glued together by a discharge from them; yellowish white, round, cheesy patches about the size of a pinhead (May vary) may be seen in the mouth and throat. These same symptoms are also
caused by some common poultry virus or disease.
When no medicine seems to work on the respiratory symptoms it an indication of Vitamin A deficiency.
Regards

Oh thank you for the information. How do I treat for a vitamin A deficiency? How would she develop that? Shes been on layer feed, the same one for years.

Update- finally got to check out the growth in her mouth. It has leveled out, but has become bigger and changed shape. I have put a call into my vet as there is not much more I can throw at it. I will update when I see my vet, but I'm not sure the outcome will be good. Poor girl. :hmm

Well, sadly, We had to say goodbye to our sweet Dottie girl today. The vet was leaning toward a virus such as wet pox. The rales in her lungs was a result of viral pneumonia from the virus. Even though fowl pox typically goes away within 14 days, her little body just couldn't kick it. She must of been immunocompromised in another way so her body could not fight it. She must of had another plaque in her esophagus that was getting larger as well because she was starting to turn blue quickly with little exertion.
So she drifted off to sleep painless and fear free...The best way to go.

Hopefully this thread will help chicken owners in the future find some answers. :)

Rest Easy Dottie Girl :love

First of all Thank you for your updates throughout your hen's sickness. It has been educational along the way for us members. Secondly and most importantly ...So sorry for your loss. :hugsI know it is hard to say goodbye to a precious pet but she will suffer no more. :hitIt certainly appears Dottie lived a great pampered life with your persistant care.
