**Pic**white leision in mouth

Here's an update. She is still kicken. About 3 days ago I was able to knock off a white chunk. It produced instant mucus and head shaking so I believe it hurts and is uncomfortable. She's not eating, but wants too, so she tried to eat a little bit yesterday, which is a slight improvement for her. The attached picture is from last night.

She has finished the doxy and is still on baytril. About 3 more doses I think of that so we will see what happens. She still has some dyspnea, but the rales sounds a little better. She still turns blue when I tube feed her.

I put her in the backyard away from my other chickens and she chose to take a dust bath, which in chicken behavior, is a positive sign to see.

She is still not very much out of the woods. I am not even sure she can kick this. I do however know that she has been treated for just about everything. I think I might give her some tramadol to help with the pain to see if she will eat a little more by herself.

I will keep updating my thread for future people trying to find answers. That was part of my problem was that I would find a thread sounded like her symptoms, but there was never any follow up.

Cheers to backyard flocks and weird chicken diseases :p:rolleyes::)

Here’s a description of oral thrush from the Mayo Clinic website. In humans obviously, but candida is candida, I suppose. You can tell better than I could whether it sounds like what you’re seeing.

Initially, you may not even notice symptoms of oral thrush. Signs and symptoms may include:

  • Creamy white lesions on your tongue, inner cheeks, and sometimes on the roof of your mouth, gums and tonsils
  • Slightly raised lesions with a cottage cheese-like appearance
  • Redness, burning or soreness that may be severe enough to cause difficulty eating or swallowing
  • Slight bleeding if the lesions are rubbed or scraped
  • Cracking and redness at the corners of your mouth
  • A cottony feeling in your mouth
  • Loss of taste
  • Redness, irritation and pain under dentures (denture stomatitis)
In severe cases, usually related to cancer or a weakened immune system from HIV/AIDS, the lesions may spread downward into your esophagus — the long, muscular tube stretching from the back of your mouth to your stomach (Candida esophagitis). If this occurs, you may experience difficulty swallowing and pain or feel as if food is getting stuck in your throat.
I don’t know that one could pick off a discrete piece of a thrush lesion, but maybe it’s possible. Usually it’s just kind of integrated with the tissue it’s infecting. Candida can go anywhere. I had a patient once who got it in her blood. She actually recovered! Pretty great, that was.

ewwww...I just realized that the picture is nasty looking.

It very well could be cancer. It looks nasty...the picture lets me really see it for what it is. I feel like it should be a part of The Stranger Things season 4. Yiikkes.

I never though about the Fluconazole! You know I will try it! Hopefully baytril will help it, but I am not optimistic. She's a stinker to tube and I can only get about 60mLs in her with a 20 French before she starts to turn blue. She pinks up right away, but she is not easy like my other chickens have been.
Jen, where were you able to secure baytril? Thanks

Yes! Thank you for asking. The shop where I had ordered is a very kind shop and they got it out quickly. I had not noticed the big disclaimer about the shop being closed when I ordered it.

@casportpony Hey Kathy, quick question about the Fluconazole. I mashed up and dissolved a 100mg tablet in water and gave her her first dose. Do I need to refrigerate he remaining solution? I just have it in a 60ml syringe in my cupboard right now. Thoughts?

Update--lesion is still there although it has leveled out some. I have noticed that it is quick to bleed, which it never was like that before. Her breathing is slightly better, still has mucus problems though. Will not eat, I am still tube feeding her (good lord I have been tube feeding her since 8/22!). I just gave her her first dose of Fluconazole...maybe this thing is a fungal infection. I know fluconazole is hard core and systemic, but its her last option. If this doesn't help or if she doesn't improve, its time to put her down. I feel bad because she still had pep in her step and is interested in eating, but just wont eat. She wants to feel better, but she just not responding to anything. Poor girl.

Maybe the bleeding is good... blood is getting to the lesion. Don’t know... just speculating, but oxygen is a healer and is carried to the tissues by blood. Refrigerate liquid Flagyl and shake well before using. Draw some air into the syringe and agitate it that way, but I would expel the air again before storing it.
