Hello again, about 4-5 months ago got 2 adult birds from a friend, they were part of the original brood but separated since adolescence. after a month and a half of being Next door, I released them into my free-range flock, I know the ISA Browns are extra active since they lay daily. Plenty of food (2 in-house feeders + they have 4 acres to roam) and 3+ watering points. Today the remaining hen turned up lame. I have been trying to make sure the new (picked on) birds had access to any extra treats and kept the feeders full. Later, around 3 hours, my son stopped a fight where she was the total victim, now she acts stunned. As I carried her to the coop I could not feel any deformations in her leg or thigh. Im going to move her to the chicken tractor I have to let her heal. I know all about the dreaded "PECKING ORDER" (Dah Dah Dummmmmm) but this attack was the worst I've seen in 4 flocks of birds. could she be sick? or do you think they are picking on her because she is lame? her comb is a little low looking but I figured that was because of the attack. Any opinions? Don't know if I need to isolate her permanently or just until she heals?

Yes, if a bird acts off or lame, they may be attacked by other chickens. It doesn’t always happen, but it happens often. I would separate her in a wire dog crate with her own food and water secured inside. You can prop her on rolled towels or you could try to make her a chicken sling. Some tolerate those, while some try to get out of them. They can be used for periods throughout the day to help them get up and reach food while taking pressure off the leg. Then you can let them out for periods of rest and sleep at night. It helps to keep her in sight of the flock in her crate to stay with the flock if possible. What is her exact age? Mareks disease can affect young birds under a year old, but injuries are more common. Human vitamin b complex tablets can be given 1/2 tablet daily crushed into some food or egg. Aspirin 81 mg 1/2 tablet can be used 1-2 times a day for up to 3 days for inflammation and pain. Here is a good link for chicken slings that you can make at home, and post 5, 11-14 are good ones:

Thanks, the "Victim" is about 2 years old, she has been the bottom bird in the pecking order. I have placed her in my chicken tractor, it has shade, water, food and three different height roosts, all 1x2s that have the edges sanded and are smooth. When the rest of the flock is out foraging, they walk all around her so I'm hoping the sight of her will keep her familiar while giving her time to recuperate.
