Also if you plan to free range 75% of the time or more, red rangers or freedom rangers would make perfect meat birds with the added benefit of eggs and you will also be able to butcher them as needed.
I have 3 different breeds all DP. However my favorite of the 3 breeds I have is the light brahma. its a large breed though but they are really friendly even my roo he is starting to i guess learn to crow he is so friendly i hope to god he stays that way.I have five of them and they r the top dogs of all the other chicks even one was the runt he is now towering over the wyandottes. I only got the L brahmas because they are supposed to be really friendly and they look cool too with their feathered feet and what i read is ringing true with them, my australorp are friendly to but not like my brahamas . I have seven australorps and i like them to, really nice bird. basically I chose breeds that are supposed to be great egg layers as well as good meat birds. Accordingly if the book I read is correct i will have a pot full of eggs
For eggs, I would recommend dominique, barred plymouth rock, easter eggers, and Rhode Island red. All of these are hardy breeds, and range from good to excellent egg layers.
