Does anyone else have picky chickens? My birds free range, and so they have access to not only their feed, but also fresh grass, weeds, and bugs. But, they will not eat fresh veggies, sprouted seeds, or other healthy treats that I offer them. Of course, when I had a popsicle the other day, one of my roos did everything he could to get a few pecks of that, but oh no way in heck will he eat broccoli! Bean sprouts? Maybe a couple, but not too many. Carrot slivers, no thanks! Apples, yuck! What picky chickies I have! I thought they loved all sorts of veggies and fruit and was hoping that they'd help me eat kitchen trimmings. I hope that when winter comes along and there aren't as many weeds to choose from they may eat the veggies, but of course I won't have so many fresh veggies to choose from then either! Does anybody else have picky chickies? Why don't they like their goodies?

Oh yes!
I thought it was just the banty Cochins but I think it is the ones that free range. They get all they need and like out in the fields. But those cooped birds will kill each other for anything I bring in. So I have come to the conclusion my cooped birds are just more appreciative and the free rangers are happy with the occasional sweet treats, like a piece of wheat bread.

Since your chickens are free ranging, they probably getting all the greens they need now. In the winter they may be more interested in your scraps. In the meantime I would just compost your scraps. How old are your chickens? My layers will gobble down almost anything I give them. My young ones don't.
