Picky Eaters?

In the Brooder

My chickens have recently become very picky eaters. When they where chicks in the brooder I would supplement their food with greens from the yard (Spanish needle, plantain, and other no-name weeds) and they loved them! They would even eat all the greens first before their crumbles. Then I moved them outside to the coop and they get crumbles morning and night but forage on almost half an acre during the day. I often see them munching on the weeds and scratching for bugs. However, recently they have been turning their noses up to the greens, even when acting like they are "starving", still they won't eat the weeds that they had been eating all along- there is still plenty for them to munch on. Any idea what changed? I kind of wonder if they are being like a child choosing between cake or broccoli. Lol Any idea how to get them back to foraging again? Thanks!

Vegetation doesn't always remain chemically constant. As plants cycle through their life stages, some can become bitter and sometimes even toxic. Animals seem to be aware of this when they have plenty to eat and aren't starving, and they will avoid these plants.

Your chickens will eat what they need and your job is to provide a nutritionally balanced feed to base their diet on. They will fill in the spaces with forage plants and insects.

Obviously I know their feed is enough to provide for them, just seems weird they've stopped eating greens too.
Thanks for your thoughts.
