PICS added: Help me sort out what seems to be complicated vent issue (prolapse/gleet?)

Thank you! Just out of curiosity, is it common for gleet to cause prolapse, or prolapse to co-occur with gleet?
I really have no idea. I could see maybe the gleet irritating the vent and causing swelling, but I've (thankfully) not had that double whammy happen in my flock.

Keep us updated. I hope that does the trick.

Well another whole week has gone by, and I just can't get this gal to fully resolve and heal. See picture below. The swelling is way down but she is still 'leaking' white drippy poop.

I'm doing
Daily clean up of her rear and re spraying with BluKote
Daily probiotics
Yogurt twice a day

Also the flock is still not dealing well with her, even with the BluKote. They just seem to know she's not right, even though her energy is fine.

What am I missing? This is going on and on.

I'm not feeling very confident on my knowledge here. Time to call in the big guns!

@Wyorp Rock @Eggcessive

They will know what to do. If it is gleet, antifungal can help. If it's prolapse, I think you gotta keep the tissue in, and antibiotics and anti inflammatory ointments will help (prep h) I think. And maybe metronidazole? I've read that before, too.

Question: Does she have water belly? Could the yellow gunk be egg stuff? I'm wondering if it might be peritonitis... I hope not...

Thanks. Upthread I talked about how it started as prolapse. I treated that for a full week with soaks, pushing prolapse in, Vetericyn. At that point she was feeling and acting sick.

There is still a little bit of swelling but that is mostly resolved. She felt tons better and got super feisty indoors, so I moved her back out.

For the last two weeks SINCE that, I've been treating with miconozole, probiotics orally, yogurt, keeping her clean, and BluKote. The thin white runny line of poop seems to stay. The flock is still picking on her (6 other hens).

I haven't heard of water belly.

I talked with my vet today. He said it is impossible to get Nystatin or Medistatin right now. There is a shortage.

Any ideas for resolving vent gleet without this remedy?

She's getting better ever so slowly. The poop is less runny now, thicker, but still forming a line down her rump and still needs to be cleaned every morning.

Energy is great; she is totally feisty and back to her spirited self.

I'm treating a hen with vent gleet right now, and I'm just doing Monistat 2x daily topically. However, I was talking with someone who said she had a hen with stubborn gleet and she realized it was the result of untreated sour crop that had spread to her chicken's whole tract. Is that s possibility? If it is, you can feed the Monistat orally, or so I've read. Someone used the suppository and just cut it into thirds and fed it orally. Some just put the cream in their beaks. You'd have to do some research on it because I don't know the dosage off hand. Wish I did so I could be of more help.

This is frustrating! It seems like you've been doing all the right things...

Just realized that you're already doing all of that. Got my threads mixed up for a sec there. Maybe a different antifungal besides miconazole? Maybe the fungus your treating is resistant???

I wish I knew!

Thanks for your response Aunt Angus. I think I've read conflicting things about using Monistat orally.

I am off to research sour crop to see if this could be complicating things.

That's something I've run into quite a bit: conflicting information. I don't mean to add layers to that conundrum.

Please keep us updated on your bird's health. I'm sure this will prove helpful to others.

I checked her crop this morning and it seems fine.

However, new today, instead of the regular leaky pasty white butt, there seemed to be egg yolk dribbling out the back.

This doesn't end. I have been at this for more than six weeks. :idunno
