I see a small pip on my chicken egg in my incubator but I want to show pics of it but can't - do pips on egg usually show a oval shaped darker shade right by the crack? the pip hasn't even shown a hole nor a beak come out - just a crack! should I be worried?😟

Yes, but can you tell me when you think they will hatch? sorry my first hatch and i have no patience... WHATSOEVER!šŸ˜…

Making that first pip is exhausting to the chick so if you don’t see any progress for a couple hours it’s okay. Jsut keep an eye on the little guy

I get it... I have no patience either :) On average they say it CAN take 24 hours from pip to zip, sometimes more, sometimes less. As long as the chick can breathe you have nothing to worry about.. sometimes they’re still absorbing their yolk and stuff. I’ve helped chicks that have pipped but not made any progress after 24 hours, or if they look like they’re not positioned correctly. Here’s a super helpful article: https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching.64660/
Go on YouTube and search up ā€œmom and chick noisesā€ those usually create a lot of action!

sry but this sounds worrying to me. No pip, but a crack having formed is not good. If a chick taps at the shell it will pip it, if the insides are rotting, then gases will build up causing a crack instead.
A chick would not be able to create a crack with the force of its body and a dark shape forming around the crack is also worrying.

Oh no, what do I do???

can you candle the egg to see if it still has an air cell?
If it still has an air cell you can relax as that would mean there is still air in the egg but if there is no air cell that means pressure is building up in the egg and you should remove it.

Hope that helps
