I agree, your barred rock just jumps out of the picture....nice little bird!

The wyandotte hen I would say is middle of the road. One of the main faults that the wyandotte breeders in my area are working on is getting the tails back on the birds. They are not supposed to have a 'bunn' for a tail, they are supposed to actually have some main tail feathers.

She looks like she carries her wings too low and her beak could be shorter....makes her look a bit crow headed. One of the best breeders of wyandottes in Canada lives 15 min from my place. He says wyandottes are all curves....there are no straight line of a wyandotte.

I'd also take a close look at her ear lobes....if there is white in them I think that may be a big fault....but it's hard to tell from the pic if it's just the picture angle and lighting, or if it's really white.

Her comb, feather quality and lacing look really good! Match her up with a really nice roo and you'd get some really nice babies.

I can't help with the ameraucana though as I don't have much experience with them.

If I can find it I will post a link for you for the wyandotte type. The picture shows a circle and thats how they are supposed to look, the breast and fluff should be like the bottom of the circle. Its hard to describe so I will look for the picture.

Urban Coyote - are you a judge? I am not , but I agree with everything you said.

I also would like to add, your bird has to be the best partridge wyandottes that I have seen. Have you every noticed that it does seem to be more difficult to get a wyandotte close to the standard in the lace and other patterned varsities?


Absolutely beautiful bird.

I have never studied the standard for Americunas, and I gave my book away recently so I don't know about the buff.

It too is a good looking bird, as well as that barred one.

I think that wyandottes usually have more of a 'form' fitting tail or they are suppose to have more of a pointy tail. Do you see how this wyandottes tail is more pointy?

You want to strive for your birds to look like this one:

The blue wheatens should also look like this one, except the black part would be blue. This is the best photo example of what the SOP is.

There are two very competitive wyandotte breeders (they are judges as well) in my area so I hear a lot of wyandotte talk and discussion on faults and 'fads' in the wyandotte circles.

One of the fads I hear a lot about that one of them doesn't agree on is the back length. A wyandotte is supposed to have a back he says. Some of the picture I see look like the birds tail jumps straight out of their neck. I don't believe that is strictly correct wyandotte type.

Here are two pics:

On the one pic it looks like the neck goes down, and then the tail goes straight up. In the other picture there is a slight curve. I believe this more correct type. Both of these birds to my eye have 'bunn' tails though.

There should be more blue in the tail feathers and on the primary wing feathers. It is a very nice bird though otherwise, the breed just needs more people to work on them. I don't think you will find a bird that 100 % fits the "whole" standard.

It is a common thing being seen in the wheatens and blue wheatens now. I have some ideas as to why, and I am discussing it with some of the other breeders.

Coyote you are correct, the standard calls for a "short" back. However, since I have been reading the Poultry Press and going to shows, if your bird does not conform to a heart shape, your probably not going to place.

Cochins now pretty much have to look like a beach ball, no back, all hackle and cushin to make the grade.
