Pics from working calves

We do use ear tags as well. Ear tags are great to tell who's who at a glance, but brands are the legal way in Idaho to claim what is yours. When you sell cattle, you have to have a state brand inspector come and check the brand and give you a certificate saying it is yours (from the brand) and you can sell it.

Anyone can take an ear tag out and put there own in, but it's kind of hard to do that with a brand.

those are some great pics of branding day.an your right you cant stand the smell of burning hide as the calves get branded.this will be my 1st year to have to brand an dehorn.but ill take the calves to the vet for that.

Yes they're of NM. I'm glad you all enjoyed them! We live on the Bell Ranch, in NE New Mexico. You have to brand here to sell and transport cattle. We also ear-tag them all now starting with this year's calves. Prior to this just the seedstock cattle were tagged.

Cara those pix were amazing! OMG I want to move there.

There was an ad in the paper not too long ago looking for a ranch hand. The people had a large horse and cow operation. I would have loved to have done it, I love horses and and getting to like cattle. They would include an apartment with satelite tv and internet, cell phone, and about $10 an hour. The main reason I didnt was because they wanted you to do it for 5 years at least and you would get sundays off to go to church, visit family/friends, go grocery shopping, etc. and not pets. I was thinking to myself that it would be a great experience, good pay, get to mess with horses and cattle all day, free room and board, and a ob for 5 years. Then I started thinking about my critters. Would I still love chickens like I do now if I am around large livestock or would I want to go with cattle and such. Also who would show my birds and continue to select only the best, in other words who could I trust to keep my line going. One more advantage is that I would get a cool accent, lol. It seems super fun except the long hot days, the injured critters, and all that good stuff.
