(Pics now... any idea?)Unsure about a possible pasty butt situation...

Idk but if your worried about pecking, Blue-kote or blue lotion will turn it purple and is also an antiseptic so will help whatever it may be heal as well as deter the other bird from pecking due to the color. Also keeping your brooder in a red light room as oppose to having white light will slow if not stop pecking. Hope this helps! Best of luck, I'm sure she'll be fine.

We just got our chicks 3 days ago, and I had read about pasty butt, but one of ours had a large raisin-ish growth below the vent ... sort of on the back party of the tummy. After reading your post, I think it must be the umbilical cord. I tried to soak it to remove it thinking it was pasty butt (which didn't do anything) but I had no idea what pasty butt looks like -- I know what I think it must look like, but it's hard to say?

I feel a bit better knowing this isn't unusual-- I guess I'll make sure the vents are clean and leave the scab-like things alone and hope it falls off on it's own.

Thanks for the information and great explanation.
