Pics of my buff saddleback geese =)

I'd say that she'd be a girl, and the leader would be the boy, as he's between her and the "danger". He definitely sounds like a good gander.

Well, I'd guess that they were young, as the previous owner didn't say they were older than a year old, meaning they didn't lay eggs during the spring. Geese don't mate during the later summer months, generally, just during their season.

I'm itching to have them already.. Gotta see what we get next week first, though. I was talking to my mom about hatching geese earlier.. She was less than excited, but thinks they're better than chickens.

ETA: Just wondering, where'd you get them?

Hate to tell you this but geese as well as ducks and chickens can be fooled about the date. You do this by increasing the amount of artificial light. You make the artificial "days" get longer while the natural days are still getting shorter. This gets them laying sooner than they naturally would. This trick is well known to show people so they can have birds that are well developed for the early shows a goose that is fully feathered out shows much better than one that hasn't completely finished molting. So I wouldn't be quite as fast to "see lies" as you seem to be. ~gd

GEGChickies,
Some lady 3 hours away from me was selling them. My mom lives in the same town as that lady, and she picked them up for me. I never met the lady myself. But i know she didnt have a clue as to who was a male or female, she just wanted them gone. Maybe they were aggressive with her? I showed them who was boss when I first got them home, so they leave me alone. LOL

That's fun! I wish my mom would do that for me.. It's possible that they just annoyed her to the point of no return. I know my geese get that way sometimes. Especially my little lone gosling, Luna. She can be quite a brat. Lucky you got them, though! You'll have sooo much fun. Are these your first geese?

gd - "Seeing lies" is more of a joking thing, not like I'm accusing anyone of anything. I just think it's more likely that the date is fudged.

I've heard of artificially beginning breeding seasons, but it's time consuming and not worth it for most people.

Young ones or old ones? The babies are really the killer.. Once you have baby geese, you never go back. My current baby, Luna the lone goose (who is getting ducks or more geese soon), follows me EVERYWHERE and makes cute whistly noises all the time. Currently, she's chewing on my flip flop. She has to come to work with us, she's so attached.

I had 2 baby geese.... a snake swallowed one halfway, then spit it out when it saw me...

now i have one baby gosling... it lives with my young chickens...

the geese i am getting are older, like the two in this thread.

Bell - Isn't the lone gosling thing just a horrid situation? We're trying to find a friend for my little Luna, because her two friends got poisoned accidentally. She hates our chickens for some reason, so her spending time with them is not an option. All she does is cry for us all night.. She has to sleep in my room and can't be left alone for more than 5 minutes without trying to jump out of the box or something stupid. She doesn't really sleep at night either. She's weird.
