These are my 7 Buff Orpington chicks. The two biggest ones are around 5 weeks, the two medium ones are 4 weeks and the 3 littles are close to 3 weeks. We got them about 3 weeks ago and are having so much fun taking care of them and seeing their individual personalities develop. One of them likes to jump up onto the feeder or waterer when I come into the room so they can jump onto my hand and perch.

Wondering if anyone on here has any experience with Buffs and when you can start to tell their gender. I’m not sure what to look for but so far they’ve all been very quiet and friendly with us and one another. I wouldn’t mind ending up with a rooster or two but we’re of course rooting for mainly hens. Can anyone see any gender signs in the pictures or is it way too early to tell? (I’m new). Thanks for looking!

I love buff Orpingtons. :) Usually by 5-8 weeks of age males will get a pink comb, than red. Pullets will keep their orange yellow comb until after 3-4 months generally.

I was able to tell my buff orpington rooster's gender at about 6 weeks, but these pictures are at 7 weeks

He's on the left, I could tell he was a rooster because of his red comb, but also he started to get long lanky legs. The one on the right is a hen.
I was worried, usually roosters turn out to be aggressive or flighty but my buff orpington rooster was the sweetest thing. I wanted to keep him but a bobcat thought otherwise.
Personally I couldn't tell any signs of genders in the pics.

Thanks for those pics! It’s cool to see that there’s quite a difference between the two at 7 weeks. Sorry about your roo 😓 these buffs really are so sweet and quiet.
