Pics of our homemade incubator and a question

I did read to start at 50-60%, and then I started reading more, and about dry hatching...keeping it at about 45% and then last 3 days bumping it up to 55-60%.

I don't know which way is the *right* way...just after reading about having the humidity too high and the chicks drowning when they pip...so leaning towards the lower end...*shrug*

I also have two stages of eggs...I had left 4 under the hen and I took 4, and she was sitting, but my other hen was laying as well and I think the broody hen was taking her eggs...I ended up grabbing 4 more (to make 8 in the bator)...but in 4 I have embryo movement, and 1 has the start of veins and 3 have nothing...but it is still early days...so just going to hold on and wait...plus one of my hens is still laying and they will sit soon I am sure...so between the bator and the hen I hope to get at least 6 chicks...3 for us, and 3 for someone waiting to buy 3 white silky chicks...

My daughter's are 8 and 10, but it took me forever to get pregnant with my first...many years of dealing with infertility...and I tell you this whole hatching eggs thing is bringing me right back to that LOL

Do you have eggs on the go right now? What is hatch day for you? Mine is July 5th

when i did my dry hatch i had the humidity at 20 and 30 percent, and the temp in my incubator was a constant 100.4 all the time, no fluctuation, and at first i thought the thermometer was wrong, but i calibrated it and it wasn't broke, it was right

Thanks

I really have no idea on the turner, I had to do it all by hand. I bought an r com suro and now use the homemade one for hatching so I can stagger hatch.

Here is a picture of my homemade job, it will hold about 2 doz. eggs & I hand turn them, I made it out of 1 inch plywood, It holds temp. rock solid, useing a wafer thermostat, 40 w. light bulb & a PC fan, it works great.

I like it:thumbsup. Do you have a window for viewing????? It would drive me crazy it I couldn't see anything, kind of like a Christmas present. And do you just turn your whole egg cartong side to side?

No I dont have a window, Its for incubating only I use a sepert hatcher, this is my thoughts, a window is going to let light in & I think light is going to make your temp. unstable, so that is why I dont use a window on my bator, but I use the window on my hatcher, it is a GQF 1602, it works good but dont hold temp. like my homemade job. & yes I just tilt the carton from side to side to turn them, its a great little set up. I think that wood holds temp. better than anything, but like I said this is only my thoughts.

I do agree with you, I had to put a towel over the plexi glass window to keep the temps stable especially at night! Since i've done that they are holding between 99-100. I plan on making a hatcher out of the current incubator and using a coleman cooler to make another incubator , but don't know if I can go without window LOL.
