Pics of our new coop! Almost done!

Well done! It looks great, especially considering that your DH isn't skilled in carpentry! I like the choice of paint, as well. I'm not to much for the whole "red barn" thing, if ya know what I mean!
I'm sure your girls will be very happy in their new home!

I have a little basset named scarlet and one day the neighbors lab got out and came after the hens and scarlet plays with this dog often she jumped on him and started biting him because before he had gotten out and killed a hen. She really is a wierd little basset LGD and now that our other dog had passed away (also a basset) all she does is watch the hens ! your coop looks great and the chickens should be very happy.

I'm so sorry I hadn't gotten back to everyone about our coop. Since we started we have added another 8x12 section so it's 8x20. The 8x12 section is for meat chickens the kids raised for the fair.

Here it is with the edition. I haven't painted it yet.

A shot of the outside of the meat chicken "wing"!!! I have a tarp on the front that we can lower up and down depending on rain and sun issues. It really worked out great.

This is the original coop before the edition. I h

ad a 10x10 dog kennel around it.

This is the best shot I can find of the nesting boxes. There are three in a row and works just fine with our girls. Proud mama and daddy duck are laying with their young'uns under the boxes!!

After we added the edition we also added more of the fencing panels. The premade panels saved us alot of time. All we did to chicken proof them was add 3 ft of the small holed chicken wire (found at TSC) to the bottom of each panel. It keeps critters out and babies in!! We used the chicken coop itself as the back fence and brought the yard out 16 ft so the whole yard is 16x20. This larger yard is much better for the ducks too. They love to have half of it covered in mud!!!

I forgot....We don't have it insulated at all. Here in Texas it's really not necessary. Last winter we did add plywood to the front (that is covered in chicken wire) to block some of the wind. I do have a little space heater in there that hangs from some chains in the corner. And I hang one of those heat lamps in the middle. It's the kind you use on your brooders. It was funny because our little coop glows red all nite!!! We did keep the side vents open so there was plenty of ventilation.

how lovely! I'm so jealous you can have such an open airy coop. sigh.
too wintery here I'm afraid...

I love the design.
DH and I are going to attempt that for our shed under the shade trees but we are going to make it entirely enclosed since our winters may get nippy at night. Also we have predators that roam through at night and we want the chickens to feel safe. We plan on 4" concrete blocks as the floor with deep bedding on top and we may....I stress "may"....put a small porch on the front.
But your design and frame is exactly what we are going to do. We are not builders either!
I think you all did a great job and I love the add on.

Thanks....my hubby will love the compliments. A carpenter he isn't!! (he just put in a new back door~~~took 4 hours!!!)

For our flooring in the meat chicken wing we put down a very thick tarp~then shavings on top. In the original 8x8 section we layed bricks down. They were left over from the construction of our house and had been sitting around for 8 years!!! Time to be used!!

The way we framed the coop made it easy to add the plywood. We didn't have to cut any of it down.
