OK; ck my BYC page for the previous pics etc...

however; today hubby put in windows; note no screen, he plans on popping the entire window out and
putting in the framed hardware cloth screen he is making... :-)

NOW question is this:

if you look closely at above front on pic; you can see ONE measly vent...
he wants to put soffit vents up under here; 3 on each side:

he wants to know if this will be enough in the winter???

it is a 10x10 coop with 25 chickens..at that time..

I honestly think that is enough. The only vent mine have in the winter is the little holes here and there where the siding didn't exactly meet up and their door hole to go in and out. Never had a problem.

The chickens will also get some adjustable ventilation through the hardware cloth covered widows, too right? They can be propped open a bit in the winter in central Illinois in the winter if needed. That should be enough with the soffits as well.

Nice looking coop.

I have found if I have lots and lots of pine shaving bedding to absorb any moisture and the pop door is open that is enough for my coop inn the winter. It also has a sofit vent just one though. During the warmer weather I have a long vent I can open plus the three windows. And on real hot days I will also latch the people door open. But it is closed up except for the pop door during the winter.

I think you will need more venting. I have an 8 x 10 with a roof vent plus the soffit vents...it got a little moist in there when it was super cold and they didn't go out, but I have covered the roof vent cause it was really sucking out the heat.

If your DH is anything like mine, he will not want to go back to fix the coop later so get it done now. Better to have too much ventilation that you need to cover than not enough.

Vent high warm air out. Vent low cool air in.

I believe the square inches of vent for each should be equal. You can get ones that have louvers so you can dial them closed if you need to. Dont worry about winter time because the coop will be warmer inside than it is outside. The chickens make their own heat.
