I got my first egg today, too! Had no idea it was World Egg Day! How cool is that?!!! And here I thought it was just the day after my FIL's birthday, and the day before my wedding anniversary! Any way you look at it, it's special!
I can't seem to take photos of my set up that do it justice. But I'm in the city and needed something that worked with our small garden and was predator proof.
It's a 20' by 14' run that is 7' tall. It's Fort Knox for my hens. Inside their run is their house which I never have to lock them in or let them out. It's covered with welded wire and has welded wire buried all the way around. And over the top, over the wire, half the run is covered w/ corrugate panels. Metal in the summer to give them as much shade as possible and clear plastic now through the winter to give them as much sun as possible.
I also have a 3x3' compost bin inside their run which I turn each week and leave the bottom 4-5" and let them kick that all around and get all the bugs.
I love the fact that my run is tall enough for me to walk into comfortably. And I love that I don't have to rush home to lock them up to know that they are safe. Yes, it was pricey but it totally works for us. And when you only have two hens, the thought of losing one to a predator is just too much for me to bear.
