Picture of my Silkie Coop

Any suggestions on what to do for nesting boxes?

I have two boxes already made, but the wood is really heavy.

Can I just use a pan or something? And would they know to lay in the pan?

How about some of those plastic storage bins? Or, I actually got a small wire bin... used for storage in the kitchen I believe. Works great. The wire ones are smaller than the plastic but a perfect size for my silkies. The fronts are lower so easy for the birds to get in.
Can you put hardware cloth over the windows and maybe a shutter that you can close when needed? That way, on warm nights, you can leave the windows open for circulation.

well it came...I haven't had the time to let my silkies test it out yet...I bought it for my silkie roo for the daytime...at night time he goes back in with everyone...with a few modifications it should be good...

I bought the barn style...medium

ChickensXOXO-- LOVE your new little silkie coop! What a great idea to use a dog house. I'm amazed that it came with such a beautiful and functional door on it! Impressive! I think it will look great painted, too. I am building a little hutch/coop to keep my silkie trio separated from the layers.

Dwegg--- also love yours! I really like the barn look, that speaks to me.

I'm still happy with mine; however, I'm going to add a small thin piece of wood at the door to keep the shavings in. They've pushed all of their shavings out. And I had an actual nesting box built over a week ago, and it's been working fine too.

Yes I have to build a door for mine, put wire on the windows and maybe some luvers so no wind or rain gets in. I am also thinking of putting a little heat lamp in there as well...
