I converted a rabbit hutch into a chicks house with a outdoor run. It is predator/cat proof, covered for rain or moisture. But the thing is I don't know where I would put the heat lamp. Because it has an upper level and ground level. I am afraid if I put 2 week old chicks out there, they would 'forget' where to go to get warm. So they are starting to outgrow the brooder, but atleast I can keep them warm in there. What to do? Will they learn to come back to the heat lamp if I put them in the new hutch?
**So with the pictures, where should the heating lamp go?
This is a picture of the hutch. The inside has two nest boxes and wire mesh on the sides. There is a board they can go down to the ground:

Here is a picture of the side, and gate inside. The netting is zip-tied all around overhead.

This is the netting covered run, with side wind breaks:

This picture is for fun. Two chicks snuggling in a toy bunny ear:

They will know where to go to get warm, or huddle against each other to keep warm. My main issue is to make sure there is space around your heat lamp...not too close to the wood/walls, etc. You don't need a fire hazard. Post a pic of your new coop. Someone on here can help you figure this out.

Okay. I will go out and get some pictures of it. I thought of a fire hazard too, something to keep in mind for sure.

My suggestion would be to put boards or cardboard around 3 sides (to minimize drafts), and rig the light so that it shines in at an angle. It still needs to be overhead (chicks warm up from there backs), so go to the upper deck with the light. Make sure the wind doesn't swing the light into the coop (fire hazard). The chicks will feather in in a few more weeks, but make sure they are all set in the night. Your temps sound like mine right now. The drafts are your main concern...it will instantly take the heat away. I keep my chicks in a brooder for at least 3 to 4 weeks. I like my chicks to have most of their feathers before taking them outside.

Thanks for the suggestions. I wanted to keep them indoors too for a bit longer. They just seem to be outgrowing the brooder, and I can't think of a bigger brooder to use right now. I do have some tin that I could use to wall off the sides of the coop/hutch.
