I love their dark black eyes!

I'm getting 4 dozen of eggs this Saturday to put under my hens that went broody! I'm sooo excited! It seems like 21 days takes forever!

Barg...Mine is six weeks old, but your pictures help. Flash does really make a difference...sometimes it's a necessary evil, though. And it's not like the chickens exactly stand still for the camera!

SeaChick...primary colors? Mabye they should provide an acceptable palette of paint chips and fabric swatches, etc. Ecru, mauve, beige, periwinkle, sage.

I'm sure that wouldn't waste too much time...would it? I'll be watching to see how things go and will be crossing my fingers. I think you are right about the embarrassment, or at least I agree that they should be embarrassed if they fail to see the value in providing our own food. I have a feeling the town clerk who told me I couldn't have chickens is ignorant or just grumpy. Honestly...we don't even live in a city...it's barely a town. I have a privacy fence, and the girls' house will be within our garage to further buffer the noise, etc. They'll have a chickie door through the wall leading to the run. I realize it's a risk and perhaps I should do what you are doing. But the neighbors said they were fine with it. My gut was telling me that the fight would be lost at the town hall...maybe not, though, seeing what you've come up with. I bet if I posted information like yours around there would be an interesting response.

3peeps: For what its worth, our councilor said (in an aside to me) "You probably should have just gone ahead and gotten them! Sometimes its easier to beg forgiveness than to ask permission..."...... of course we'd already gotten neighborhood approval so that probably would have been a great idea. It has been SO MUCH WORK (I can't put that in BIG enough letters- it has been exhausting!) to do this campaign, and not even over yet....... On the other hand, it's been a great lesson for Olivia, and created a pretty interesting dialog in the community, so hopefully will be worth it in the end.

The 1st picture is to give you an idea of what a hen and rooster look like at about 8 weeks old. The hen is on the left, the rooster is on the right, and it's funny because he's sitting right above his name (and we didn't put him there). The last picture is of the Australorps at about 4 months old.

Are these breeds good layers? What shade of brown eggs do they lay? Do you think they are a docile, quiet bird or more of the louder agressive kind?

Trying to decide what I am buying tomm., I'm buying 4 or 5 pullets tomm and so far I know I'll buy 2 Golden Comets. I'd like a layer of really dark brown eggs but the only poultry farm here has RIR, Black Sex Links, Australorps and GC's. to choose from. Any suggestions?

Mine haven’t started laying yet so I’m reciting the things about them that I have read and memorized haha.

They are docile, in my experience.
Mine are not as friendly toward people as my Dominique’s, but they seem quiet and non aggressive and not at all skittish, just not the "in your face kinda, pick me up I want to be held", friendly that the Dominique’s are.

Thanks everyone for the pics and info! I think my australorp "Mrs. Elinger" (Mrs. E. for short...named after a teacher my brother and I loved so very much) is most likely a hen.

SeaChick: I think I'm going to lay low and just be extra respectful of the neighbors. It seems like the right thing to do...however, if I come across some problems, I will certainly take you up on your information offer! Thanks so much.

I only have one Black australorp. Her name is Daphne & she is the top hen. She is bossy & bullies the flock but with me she is the sweetest thing. She never misses a chance to jump on my lap & snuggle
here she is at about 8 months old

She lays nice brown eggs, but she's not my best layer. She also is the loudest in my flock. She sings when she lays, when she's thinking about laying, when any one of her "sisters" lay, when the wind blows, when a plane flies over & just about any other time, she's wacky but i love her.

Thanks for the great pictures, Kelly! She's a very pretty bird. I have a feeling mine will be very vocal, as well. She's that way now, at 7 weeks.
