Does anyone have pictures of chicks/chickens resulting from crossing a Black Copper Marans rooster with any of the following hens: Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, New Hampshire Reds, Sapphire Gems or Silver Laced Wyandottes?
One of our chickens went broody and without a rooster of our own, we got some fertilized eggs from a friend with a BCM roo and hens of the breeds listed above. We ended up with 4 chicks and are trying to figure out what mixes we may have.

There's a great chicken color/pattern genetics calculator here: http://kippenjungle.nl/Overzicht.htm#kipcalculator

The first green row is in English, and there's a pulldown menu to choose BCM and your hen colors.

It works great if both sire and dam are purebred for color type- hybrids and barnyard mixes are wonderful but make color genetics really hard! So the Sapphire Gem chicks are going to be tough to anticipate.

Your Buff Orpington and New Hampshire red chicks will be pretty easy to identify as they feather out. Your Barred Rock crosses will result in barred cockerels and black pullets. But your SLW crosses will both be black- so you'll have at least three chances for black chicks.

Too, it's likely your Sapphire crosses will be black too.

So you'll have to start looking at leg color to determine lineage.

It's a fun puzzle to solve, and the calculator gives you guidance as what to look for...

Have fun!

I don't have photos, but these points may help sort out some of the chicks:

--any chick with a rose comb has a Wyandotte mother. All other chicks should have single combs. (Some Wyandotte hens can also produce chicks with single combs, but none of those other breeds should ever produce rose combs.)

--Black chicks with white barring are sons of the Barred Rock hen.

--Blue chicks have the Sapphire Gem mother.

--Black chicks could come from almost any mother. They may grow up to show leakage of one color or another (see the next two points.)

--Chicks that show various amounts of silver (white that is not barring) could come from the Wyandotte hens, the Sapphire Gem hens, and the Barred Rock hens. All such chicks should be males.

--Any hen can produce black daughters that may have leakage of buff, gold, or red. Most of the hens can produce black sons that have leakage of those colors too.
