Pigeon Backpacks

Hi Chickeroos,

I have a question that I see hasn't been addressed yet.

Has anyone made a backpack for pigeons;

If so, can you provide instructions and pictures;

What material did you use;

The backpack I'm looking to make will be big enough to fit small notes and USB sticks, nothing too large and something that will fit comfortably on the pigeons back.

Do you pigeroos have any experience or advice with setting up pigeon Backpacks;

I have not made one, but if I were going to, I would look at the flight harnesses that they make for small parrots, and then attach something small to it. You may want to consider rather than attaching it to the birds back where it might get in the way of the wings, attaching to the belly in front of the legs.

The flight harness leashes attach in the center of the chest on the underside of the bird, so if a leash there doesn't cause issues with flying, then I wouldn't think a very small package would.

If having them carry something with any weight to it such as a usb stick, I would get them used to flying with the weight well before asking them to carry it for any significant distance.

Also, something else to think of, if you send a USB stick, make sure that there isn't anything on there that you wouldn't mind a stranger seeing. If the bird gets killed by a hawk, likely that USB will be laying on the ground somewhere and a stranger may pick it up and look through it. Also, pigeons do strange things sometimes like the one that took a stroll THROUGH the school my husband teaches at... It was just walking down the hall... It was banded and they checked, it was from another state...

Use a spent rifle shell and a zip tie to attach notes.
Any sort of tubing or jacket from a ball point pen will also work as a pigeon canister.
Perforate the canister and thread a zip tie and attach to pigeon leg
