What is the best to use for the floor in the loft? I put down mats that they use in horse stalls, Do I need to put something on top? like straw or wood chips? I thought the mats would be easy to hose off. The mats are made of rubber. I am new at this and really could use some advice. Thank you.

It depends of how many pigeon you have. If you have only a few then the matts you have will be great and easy to keep spotless clean.

If you have more birds then I find the best is dry coarse sand.. a good few inches deep. The birds poops dry out on the sand and you can rake it over ever few days and throw away and mess like feathers and clumps of poop.

So long as it stays dry then there is no smell and the birds stay clean too as they are not waking in fresh poops and spreading them around the loft.

mats are nice fairly easy to clean. dont need a covering . draw back and is not wanted mice and rats borrow under them and make nests and raise there

Sounds like a good plan. I have a small tarp covering my flooring and I pull it out once a year along with some spot cleaning from time to time. I also employ my empty nylon mesh feed bags as liners in my nest boxes and under areas where they roost.
