PIGEONS and COLD WEATHER

I worm my flocks before a super cold spell because working them can make them sick a little bit. Then id ck the bird for external parasites to rule them out. The can kill just as easy in a harsh winter as this. If not perhaps internal parasites then. I do worm yr around - however its not good to do so in this harsh weather. Normal winters i have gotten away with it- not this one. Try to use damacious earth for both internal and external parasite it should help and cant hurt! I use it more in the winter in between the winter and spring.

Also make sure they have NO drafts because
Pigeons cannot take much of that as well. But good suggestion on moldy feed! Btw! Also yes they may not range but you cannot control a hungry cardinal from snagging a meal and they always seem to poop in the outside cups!!!! Darn them! Lol but yes outside birds in this weather here have been stealing food and water and droppings are in the cups. Not much u can do but clean the cups . Lol

Thanks,I will try it,I have seen mice stealing food and sparrows do get into the outside pen, can't protect them from everything I guess!

Your birds need to be soft wormed for round worms: wazine 17 (piperazine). Most Wormers make all types sizes stages and ages of worms die, which then either need to be passed through body if amount doesn't block rot and make ill or die, or body break down and deal with as well as deal with the harsh pesticides now too after being weakened alreaby bugs sucking nutrients and leaving waste. sick birds under winter stresses sometimes cannot deal with the overload of worms, or most wormers at that time either. Even if wild birds or rodents ect cannot get in loft, bugs can and will leave worms cysts and eggs in loft, or be eaten directly by pigeons. I've seen most of my pigeons eat all sorts of bugs, as well as various other things, so please don't try to argue pigeons are strict seed n grain eaters only.

Boost them with direct drop in mouth of "poultry drench" and maybe "vet rx" for each pigeon if can depending on how they seem, then day later (after witholding water night before) make one table spoon of "wazine 17" in one gallon of water, and use as sole water solution in that ratio as much as needed for one whole day, or two. then after give drop of "poultry drench" again, maybe also one drop of "vet rx" each if birds still looking down. repeat once in 12-15 days. piperazine at 17% solution, sold as wazine 17, is a mild acting wormer for round and nodular worms, that temporarily parilizes the larger adult worms and allowing them to be dislodged and passed through system, leaving young to grow and have process repeated before they breed in two weeks. source from two vets pn the chicken forums. i looked up and got this stuff, after necropsies on pigeons that perished early in winter, and found fat happy huge colonies in intestines ect of most of those birds. I also had caught BOPs attacking chicken wire of old pen, causing four to die of bashing around i guess or stress, but one showed severe cardiac distress. this solution cannot be allowed to freeze otherwise useless then.

Pigeons especially depending on type/s and amount/s of feed (im having to feed half to one cup per four to five birds daily in seperated sexes cages, females needing the higher amount), can die quite quickly in hours even if they do not have adequate water to drink right after finished feeding. i feed all my pigeons first then after done feeding then water (i turn hot on all way till hot, then turn cold on all way, this makes hot but not too hot for my wrist, then water with these large cups/pales/buckets), as water this winter freezing soon after put out. course my birds are in open air all wire rabbit cages with block perches each left around sides on floor wire, in open air on open covered porch on back of house. Bad yes, but my back went out with weather that maybe making worse.

hope this helps some at least.
