Pigeons: Modena and Damascene questions

I am interested in keeping pigeons someday, and wondered about two different breeds. First, Modenas, Can they fly? They look too chubby but the info i read says they were originally flown in certain types of competition. Second, Damascenes, How can I get some? They seem pretty rare. Can a pigeon fancier point me in the right direction? Also what pigeon reference books are good to have?

Modern modenas still can fly, not very well, but if let out since young, they will fly.
