Is it cost efficient to raise your own hog for slaughter?

All I know about pigs is when I was a kid some 50 years ago, dad bought six little sows every year. He'd dock their tails and we raised them. In the fall, he took them to the butcher. In the spring, he'd go get us six more.

I can tell you this. In my experience it costs about as much to have them processed as it does to raise them.
