Pilgrim Gander?

This got more complicated tonight. As I was feeding them, a young couple stopped and gave me an earful. These people have been rescuing drakes for years and releasing them, "giving them a chance at life". At first on a family pond, but as passion turned to hoarding he released them on local ponds. He thinks they eat the algae. All the homeowners are evil because they didn't want his ducks on the neighborhood pond or their yard. It was the home owners responsibility to put up fencing to exclude the ducks from their yards. Everything was about his entitlment to use the pond for his ducks. He threatened to follow me home, but didnt. He also threatened to call the police for theft.
I really wish that I never got involved.

Wow. They're really uneducated. Releasing domestic animals into the wild isn't "giving them a chance at life". It's a death sentence. Domestic ducks and geese aren't equipped like wild species at escaping and eluding predators. I'd try to report these guys for dumping poultry. Surely there's something that can be done? I'm sorry they're giving you trouble when you're just trying to help. What a shame. Do what you can and vent away on here if need be! It's unfortunate they resorted to threatening. These people shouldn't have animals.

Well it appears they don´t! They´re all at the pond! Cheeky fellow, eh? Fancy thinking that it´s up to others to fence in their property just to keep his ducks off! It would appear that he regards the pond as belonging to him! And actually, that´s not rescuing them, that´s just moving the problem along....that´s like me "rescuing" all the flea-bitten, half-starved stray dogs around here, and putting them on the local beach for them to have a "chance at life"! (that would be illegal even here!)
Pilze, I imagine it´s against the law where you are to dump domestic poultry in the park. Is there any body of people that has oversight of the park? Local council, for example? You could win them over, have a word with them about what´s what. Unfortunately it was you who got it in the neck, but from what you say there are any number of people that he would have had a go at that don´t like him dumping his birds on the pond. The goose (if it is a goose) needs her gander, and vice versa.

And just in case you should be tempted to put the gander back, be careful that you then don´t get caught and fined!

Talk to Kalsti, she has experience in this line.

I just want to very clear that at no time did I feel fearful of my safety, but I really wish I had a cell phone. He was knowledgeable, calm but very passionate about ducks and especially drakes, but I'm not going back because they are not rational. He offered to "rescue" any of my unwanted drakes and he almost had me suckered into his delusion. He's in violation of at least 2 or 3 City Animal Ordinances. I think it would be a violation to take the gander back and release it. It's not a public pond, but a retention pond in a housing development. The birds have no shelter, except for the protection of the water. Some neighbors never wanted the ducks and were never asked. When I left, he didn't attempt to block my way at all but he followed me for approximately one mile. I was just going to drive to the police station, but he turned off. I made sure he wasnt behind me before continuing home.
I need to find a goose for this guy asap, because all I have are ducks. We also need a name.

So he wanted to rescue your ducks to do what...put them back on the pond?!!

So the retention pond is a dumping ground, then. Poor goose. That´s even worse, because geese can and do pick up all manner of objects and swallow them, it´s called hardware disease, and it can kill them. Very sad about the gal that´s left there, poor little thing. Could you go, then, to the local police and tell them there´s a goose there that someone dumped, and it needs a home, get their support?
Seems the guy wanted to intimidate you for sure. Very unnerving behaviour to follow you all that way. Seems he thinks he still owns what he dumped, without taking the responsibility to feed and protect them. Do you think he thought you were going to the police station?

These folks are sick. Do you have a water fowl rescue group in your area? here in my part of the country we have Carolina Water fowl, not real close about 2.5 hrs away but they will rescue waterfowl. maybe you can find out if there is anything around you.
