pilgrims

Hi
Check your shipped eggs with a candler and assess for any damage or weakness. Pay aprticular attention to the air cell to check that non have ruptured or detached (the contents will appear to freely move within the air cell). Leave them to settle in a cool room on their sides for 24 hours before setting.

Bookerdog - I love the pictures of your goslings, I'll bet you're over the moon with them

Hi Pete,
Just finished doing all of that - it's something I've always done with chicken eggs too, so that at least is something I'm familiar with. I've weighed them all as well. I did have them settling for 24 hours, but slanted at about a 35 degree angle and not totally on their sides. This is also how I've just arranged them in the incubator about 15 minutes ago. Is this incorrect? Holderread's book says to have them angled with the air space end up, do you believe they're better off laying totally on their sides? Ugh, high anxiety time.

Oh, and thanks for the advice - I'm very appreciative of everyone's help.

Congrats.. I own Pilgrims too. Hatched 17 chicks myself about 5 or 6 weeks ago.. They are the sweetest!

All righty just set mine as well! I couldn't make up my mind so I ended up giving 2 to "Big Mamma" hen and setting 2 in the incubator - we'll see who does a better job!!

My vote is with the hen as well! But I thought I would give it a whirl. I am hoping (if) mine hatch I can sneak them out to her so she can raise them all!

Hi

Blefky -you are correct angle them up slightly at about 20 degrees which will help final hatching position. Dont overdo the humidity or temperature (37.2C).

Bookerdog - another 23 in lockdown soon

Keeping my fingers crossed for more good resuts for you

Ok, so it's day 5. Couldn't wait any longer, I had to candle (I know, at my age you'd think I'd have a little better self control

) and 4 out of 5 show excellent veining! The fifth is iffy, either much slower, or it quit, but I'm leaving it in for now. I'm really happy. Another question - regarding cooling the eggs, I've read somewhere that it isn't necessary when using a forced air incubator. I'm using a forced air bator, Brinsea 20 Eco. I have the time and willingness to cool them daily so that isn't the issue, just wanting to do what's best for them. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm trying not to get over excited at this early stage, but these are shipped eggs, so I am really happy to see life in so many of them!
