While cleaning out a brooder I found pin worms. I assume this means the chicks (and likely all my chickens) have them. Its even a good indication I may have them although I have no symptoms. I did handle the bedding and manure coming out of the brooder and that increases my chances of catching them but I am getting treated for them by an old traditional method that won't work for chickens. Any suggestions on what to do or use on my flocks to get rid of them, and also prevention for the future. I have not seen pins worms since I have been keeping chickens so its my first time encountering them while keeping livestock.

I'm not sure if pin worms (a type of round worm) which would infect humans is the same species that would infect poultry and suspect not.. Some things like certain fleas, mites, etc.. are species specific. According to the following link.. they are in fact NOT the same species.. This should be a good link to get you started..

I would treat the birds with a round worm treatment of choice and probably not worry about myself according to the information I've seen during my search on this subject. :fl

thanks for the help, first time I saw tiny white worms in a brooder and it really stressed me out. I am still buying some copenhagen and swallowing me a pinch. It will make me sick but its something I need to do every 10 years to clean out the system then eat fermented foods all day the next day to get the good gut bacteria back up.

Wow, that;s a funny, gross, and possibly fantastic ideal!

I mean I've had a seriously RUDE awakening to the western way of medicine aka big pharm.. and these old techniques.. possibly even JUST a tobacco leaf not enhanced with whatever big tobacco uses IF they do.. would be just as effective.. But long story short that makes me go hmm on your thought.. when we replaced our septic system and leach field the contractor said that a single cigarette butt thrown down the sink or toilet is enough to cause major disruption to the bacterial life killing it off and stopping it from performing vital tasks of digesting and breaking down waste.

I would probably never really consider swallowing chew on purpose.. but at least NOW.. I might be able consider it as an alternative, should the NEED present! And at the very least.. something interesting to ponder! :highfive:

an entire clove of crushed garlic might work too. There are other organic or homeopathic tricks for worms but the only one I know for sure is tobacco. Knowing that I can not get worms from chickens and I likely was not handling human pin worms I am probably going to skip the copenhagen solution. I have Tobacco seeds and maybe I should just grow my own for medicinal purposes. I save various seeds for emergency bartering or growing and I have tobacco seeds I need to plant soon or they may not be viable anymore.

Wormwood is also pretty easy to find for parasite treatment. You will be surprised to find it in most walgreens even. I took it often when I lived in Africa, it totally does work for humans. But you will see the worms in your toilet after you take it, it will be like worm-ageddon so don't stare too close. ;)
