pine bark mulch - safe??

i know you can use pine shavings, but i have easier access to crushed pine bark mulch - would that be safe to put it my chicken yard?? it gets muddy when it rains alot - which it has been doing!

I've used pine bark nuggets several times in the last two years with no problems. However, it's not easy to clean up with this kind of litter, so now I've switched to sand in all of our runs, most recently in the largest run. And I have the aching back to prove it!

I'm going to use sand as well. Easy to rake up poop and put into a compost.
