pine shaving? what is it actually

the one i have are long about six inches are those the bad kind of pine and i used the dead one when it turns brown

That is what I plan to use. Am pretty sure it is pine since you describe the length of the needles. Just remember they will not be very absorbing. I clean out my coop often and use the rotted manure and mixture in my garden. If you plan to use it for a long term litter it would probably be better to get something more absorbant. I clean out at least every two weeks and add more each week to compensate.

I used pine shavings, the little wood chips that come in bale and then my DH thought it would be cleaner to use hay...
personally I would stick to pine shavings... it is way more absorbent and seems less messy than hay.. DH thought that it would prevent all the little fly away bits that make a "mess" infront of the coop... well now we have hay in front of the coop!!!

i just googled ponderosa and that is what i am using. Why would you say don't use it? will it harm my chickens? I just put it in tonight will keeping it in there till the morning harm them?

If you don't want to buy pine shavings...some people used dried leaves...but you'll need a lot of them as they break down quickly. I use them in my covered run, but not in the coop. Are you looking for something that's free?

I bought a paper shredder, and use it to shred newspapers (no glossy pages), junk mail, bills (after paying), cereal boxes, etc, etc.
Creates plenty of bedding to spread around the coop floor. Clean the coop out once or twice a week and throw it in the compost pile.
