I have pine shavings shipped to me from Anchorage, Alaska. I usually get Gem Premier Pine Shavings in 4. Cu. Ft. Bags. This time they were out of that and sent me 3.0 Cubic Ft. bags of Diamond Shavings. It says pine shavings on the bag, but they have kind of a cedar smell to them. They have Gem Shavings name on them and address, but it says there are made in Canada. Does anyone have any experience with these shavings. I'm afraid they have cedar in them, even though it says pine. I put some in the pen.. because I need some bedding... Please let me know ASAP if you know anything about this bedding.

Thanks,

Tia

Are there no saw mills of any sort in Valdez? You know, the kind that saws logs for log cabins and such. If you do, call them and see if you can get shavings from them. Sometimes pine shaving have a real "pitchy" smell that is similar to cedar. If they do not say cedar then you are probably okay.

those pine shavings are produced in mills in Canada and then they are shipped via truckloads to different places in the Us and Canada, they are then packaged and distributed to stores elsewhere for sale. the will say product or manufactured in Canada and they are pine shavings, nothing to worry about. I answered a similar question like this a while back but I can't remember if its the same company or a sister company. Either way, they are all Pine shavings, some are more aromatic then others :-)

I wouldn't worry. Cedar can have a weird smell that pine can emulate. Plus the color of cedar is a little different. If you have any of the old shavings (in the trash, stuck to a botton of a shoe, etc, lol) you can compare color.
