Pine Shavings in My Water: Advice

Quote:
That's what I do too. ALL chickens kick their bedding into their water and poop in it, so you're not alone!

My chicks use water nipples! It didn't take them long at all to figure it out and once they did, they stopped using the water dish. It seems they prefer their water to be clean also.

I'm using a gallon ice cream bucket for the brooder water and they think it's fun to hop on top but since it's all closed up, there is no way for them to foul their water.

I also have that problem. I felt bad for them tho. I put blocks of wood underneath it and the almost solved. I only have to clean it out once a day now. But now I had to change to a bigger water dispenser (long story)... and it fills up so quick : (

I had the same problem and used the same type of waterer. I also have 5 chicks that are a couple weeks older than the other 3, so they were bigger. So, I had a small piece of 2x4 that I also put a brick on and then sat the waterer on the brick. That way, the larger birds could drink and the smaller birds used the 2x4 to step up on to reach the water. As they get older, I either add another 2x4 or a brick, but there is a little platform for the younger, smaller birds to use. It has helped out tremendously with the shavings getting into the waterer.
