Pine Straw

I used pine straw for over a month in my coop. As far as I could tell there were no ill effects. They quickly packed it all down where there were not really any pricklies poking up. I have just recently switched to dried grass ( bushoged out of my grandparents field) just because it looked softer. I also put some pine straw in the run and it is still in there with no problems even with all the scratching and pecking they do. So I would say yes you can use it, but the stiff nature of it when its dry turned me off of it.

I have yet to pay a single dollar for bedding in my coop.

I don't use pine starw even though I have a 30 acre tree farm because I learned years ago when I worked for a landscaping company that roaches and bugs love pine straw.

(It's the worst thing you can put around your shrubs by your house unless your into paying an exterminator)

Anyway, the chickens might like the bugs, but I figure when they are in the box, walking in circles and getting comfortable, they don't want to be distracted by a bug. cause you know they will chase it.

I bought a push mower with the back bagger or I can use a side shoot. I put the bagger on and within under 1 min. I can fill it from the rich grass above the septic tank and lines.
The hens love it. I change it about every three days.

Pine straw is truely remarkable. I have two huge Aleppo pines in my backyard. I have been trying to mulch the needles. It has been about eight years now, and they are all out there just like I left them. Of course the pile goes down over time, and I add more to it. But as of yet, I don't seem to be getting any mulch out of it. It is just too hot and dry here.

Thank you for all the replies on the subject of pine needles/straw. After reading all you had to say, I think I will go with the pine SHAVINGS. I know the feed store sells it, I'll have to ask about the price. Thanks to all, I appreciate all your knowledge.

On another note, I heard my young rooster trying to crow this morning. He's got some work to do, but it was neat to hear him trying. God bless!
