I used pine straw for over a month in my coop. As far as I could tell there were no ill effects. They quickly packed it all down where there were not really any pricklies poking up. I have just recently switched to dried grass ( bushoged out of my grandparents field) just because it looked softer. I also put some pine straw in the run and it is still in there with no problems even with all the scratching and pecking they do. So I would say yes you can use it, but the stiff nature of it when its dry turned me off of it.
