pink slime in waterer

My chick waterer keeps getting slime in it. I change out and wash the waterer every other day with antibacterial dishsoap and it keeps getting slime in it. I'm soaking it in vinegar right now...but does anyone know what it is and how to stop it? I'm assuming its bad, but it comes back almost immediately.

I add Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar to my animals water. It keeps the slime down & is healthy for your animals. I still get some slim but I just clean them daily. I'm a firm believer in giving my animals fresh clean water everyday. I use one tablespoon per gallon.

I have two waterers, one is an old metal one I have had for years and years, tha other is an old Canning Jar with a drink type plasic screw on lid/bottom I got at the Feed Store for a couple of bucks.

The chickens seem to prefer the glass jar. I have never had any "slime" in my waterers... I change them daily.

If the slime keeps coming back, you might try a bit of bleach.. Then wash it good with detergent, and rinse it until you are sure the chemicals are all gone. The bleach ought to kill the slime. That is what I do with my birdbath. It does get algae/slime in it from time to time. About twice a year I use bleach to clean birdbath. It seems to keep the algae under control.

One thing I would stop doing is using antibacterial soap. If it has something like triclosan in it (I think that's the main antibacterial in soaps and lotions) it can contribute to resistant strains of bacteria. Plain soap and/or bleach will do the job just as well, and bleach kills germs without causing resistance. I don't use antibacterial soaps for anything.

If you can get your hands on some Grapefruit or Citrus seed extract, put a few drop in the waterer with the water. It's often sold as a natural water purifier for campers in health food shops. It's anti fungal, anti bacterial, anti viral, kills everything nasty in the water and is good for keeping the birds crops etc healthy when they drink it.

I had a waterer than had green slime all in the grooves that I couldn't scrub out, I tried this stuff and it even made that existing slime disappear! I've left the waterer for two weeks and it didn't go slimy, even if feathers or dirt gets kicked in. Amazing stuff

Just came across this thread . . . I am seeing the pink slime in my peep waterer, even if I change the water out multiple times per day! I haven't seen it in my large chicken waterer. I will try the braggs. Did you ever find a solution?
