pink tumor under eye with eye almost completely swollen shut -- canker?

My 4 month old Barnvelder started out with a small bump under her eye which in 3 days swelled 4x the size and her eye is now open just a slit. I've heard you can slit the skin and push this hard tumor out. Is this a successful procedure? She's on her 4th day of metronidazole, still eating and socializing but am worried she'll lose her eye. Not really any pus but the bulge is a shiny pink and hard. Can't figure out how she got this as everything I've read says it's transferred via water but my girls are fully enclosed so no pigeon or wild bird has had access to their water. Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge, I'm a newbie!
