Pip but no chirping in incubator!

Congratulations on your chicks :celebrate As soon as you put them in the brooder you can't start encouraging them to eat. I like to start my chicks off with a shallow bowl of fine chick crumb. Once they are in the brooder I dip their beaks gently in the water so they know where it is. I then tap my finger in the crumb so it makes a noise. This is what mother hen would do encourage them to come and investigate the food. They soon start pecking at it and realise it's food. I just do this regular until I've seen everyone eating and drinking.

I also agree with WV that the cord you can see will dry up and fall off naturally. It's just the umbilical cord.

Good luck with them :thumbsup

Thanks so much for your help. 3 happy chicks in the brooder and 1 drying off in the incubator. 1 is still hatching and certainly taking her time! It has been around 24 hours since the 1st pip, quite a few cracks but it doesn't seem too keen to get out. Wondering at what time (if it doesn't hatch) when I need to interfere? Thanks so much

They have found the food. :) Thanks so much for all your help

That's great!! I had a few take over 24 hours with my last hatch, but if that one is struggling, you need to decide if you are going to help or not.
There's a great "assist" thread, let me go find it.

Thank you so much. It is very useful!

She is chirping lots at the moment and has gone a bit further in hatching, so I will wait and see!
Thank you.

So what happened?
I had to help her. The membrane was stuck to her head, wing and back. I took off all the egg shell, and she was ok, but VERY tired!!!!! She stayed in a small cardboard box (separate from the other chicks because they were pecking her) for the night. We didn't think she would make it through the night but she did.

This morning we washed her off with a damp towel, and all the shell and membrane came off. She is now in the brooder with the other 4 chicks and is doing alright. She is drinking and eating when I encourage her.
She's a survivor!
Fingers crossed!
Thank you all SO much for your help!
