Congratulations on your chicks
As soon as you put them in the brooder you can't start encouraging them to eat. I like to start my chicks off with a shallow bowl of fine chick crumb. Once they are in the brooder I dip their beaks gently in the water so they know where it is. I then tap my finger in the crumb so it makes a noise. This is what mother hen would do encourage them to come and investigate the food. They soon start pecking at it and realise it's food. I just do this regular until I've seen everyone eating and drinking.
I also agree with WV that the cord you can see will dry up and fall off naturally. It's just the umbilical cord.
