The green line represents the center of the egg from top to bottom. See how I had the pointy end lower than the higher end? The shaded area is the air cell. The pip is on the bottom, right against the incubator plastic.

i know opening the bator you risk shirnk wrapping the chick then having to assit it, you also risk shrink wrapping the other chicks that havent hatched yet.

i would be afraid the chick would drown as the pip hole should be around the air cell so when it does pip it can breath air but a the same time i wouldnt want to risk any of the other chicks that havent hatched yet

Thank you for your help.

I only have three eggs, and this is the only one that has pipped so I wasn't too worried about losing humidity ... it's not really an issue until hatch time.

I did open the incubator to rotate that egg, then gave everyone a good mist with some hot water. Closed the lid and humidity is right back up where it should be.

Fingers crossed, thanks again for your help.

Well, since the other chicks that hatch kick around the pipped eggs I have had a few that rolled face down and they hatched with no problem. I think drowning is only a concern if there was too much humidity to begin with or if they pip through their yolk (which has happened twice with me).

I just had two hatch that pipped and zipped on the pointy end with it setting down in an egg carton. I think the only risk of drownding is if the humidity was kept too high during the first 18 days. If that was the case there would be liquid running out the pip hole.

Happy to say that, with a bit of assistance, the egg that pipped in the "wrong" spot finally hatched this morning, and after pipping around 7pm last night, egg number two zipped around 8am and was out about ten minutes after the other! Unfortunately, the third egg didn't make it. These two pipped so early (day 17) that I hadn't even locked down yet. I had only stopped turning the eggs the morning before, which I think is where the confusion came in for the chick that pipped the shell rather than the membrane.

Eggtopsy revealed a huge air cell, and a lot of undigested yolk. I'm wondering if this chick didn't actually break into the air cell first, but die out because the humidity was still 30%.

I just ordered a batch of 25 (minimum order) from Stromberg's now because I'm a little nervous to end up with a loner if one of these doesn't make it. Thank you all for the help. I'm definitely ordering a new incubator next spring: three at a time isn't going to cut it for me anymore.
